Thomas E. Broffman, PhD, LICSW Presents: Utilizing Motivational Interviewing to Address Gambling Disorder

Motivational interviewing is an evidence based practice based on CBT principles to enhance gambling clients’ motivation to change through use of engagement strategies specific to the person’s stage of change. MI is an evidence based practice to treat gambling disorders. Gambling clients often struggle with cognitive distortions and irrational beliefs about gambling. MI is particularly effective with gambling clients in the pre-contemplation, contemplation and determination stages of change. The key strategy is to resolve gambling client’s resistance to change without increasing their resistance to change.
At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Define multiple MI techniques to help gambling clients to change
- Describe the Stages of Change & complete a Stage of Change Assessment with gambling clients
- Define the 4 principles of MI
- Define the 3 components of the spirit of MI
Thomas E. Broffman, PhD, LICSW, CAADAC, CCS, CEAP is the owner & operator of Broffman Training & Consultation Services and is a regionally known trainer and consultant. His primary expertise has been a Motivational Interviewing trainer, consultant and practitioner for over 25 yrs. He has been involved in MI implementation projects (MI training and MI coaching) in family service and healthcare agencies as well as a variety of assisted treatment homeless and housing, domestic violence, co-occurring disorders, gambling treatment programs, and day treatment/IOP.
