According to the 2013 Massachusetts Statewide Gambling Behavior, Opinions, and Needs Assessment: A study of Gambling and Problem Gambling in Massachusetts, the Latino population appears to have a significantly lower rate of gamblers, and those who do gamble appear more likely to be social gamblers than the general population.

Regardless, non-traditional, culturally-tied gambling activities – such as cock fights, underground dice games, and widespread video slot machine gambling at bodegas — suggest a need for gambling disorder prevention, intervention, and treatment programs that are culturally and linguistically competent.

We believe that one of the best ways to reach out to Latinos is by developing relationships with individuals and organizations, and by participating in cultural events and festivities, thereby raising awareness at the community-level. The Council is present at as many events as possible, offering literature and referrals for help, as well as answering questions about gambling disorder programs and services. The helpline is answered in English, but translators are available in every language.
