Player Health

What’s player health?

Player health encompasses a wide spectrum of education, prevention, and early stage intervention strategies.

We tend to use the term player health over responsible gambling — the former better showcases the scope of our work. We also maintain a neutral approach to legalized gambling and video gaming. We aim to increase the protections making gambling, gaming, and other consumer activities healthier and safer for those who choose to play.

Our Scope

We facilitate and operate GameSenseMA, an award-winning program and services for Massachusetts track, casino, and sports betting patrons and players worldwide. Shared through our team of multilingual GameSense Advisors (GSAs), resources combine gambling education with interactive exhibits and demonstrations. Several GameSense Advisors are sports betting experts, providing another layer of education to players.

MACGH’s work spans to gambling in other states and continents. MACGH staff also analyze existing systems to develop pro-consumer, pro-public health resources for industry stakeholders and government officials.

Massachusetts players can opt to self-exclude three ways:

  • Casino Voluntary Self-Exclusion: from state casino floors and marketing lists
  • Sports Wagering Self-Exclusion: from sportsbooks at state casinos; brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, licensed online platforms, and marketing lists
  • Dual Self-Exclusion: both casino and sports wagering

Individuals can self-select how long their break will be and can enroll remotely or in person. MACGH staff provide resources and conduct regular, tele-support check-ins.

We know that individuals and their loved ones might have questions at any hour. We maintain 24/7, 365 digital platforms for around-the-clock gambling-related questions to foster positive play.

We conduct approximately 50 community presentations and outreach activities annually.

Our team also develops trainings for operators, regulators, clinicians, community professionals and other industry stakeholders on education, prevention, and early intervention. We’ve also developed GambleSafe Certified, a customizable gambling awareness program, for agencies and organizations engaging with at-risk individuals.
